ISMN U.S. Agency and Its Functions

The U.S. ISMN Agency is responsible for the assignment of the ISMN Publisher Prefix to publishers of printed music with a residence or office in the U.S. and are publishing titles within the U.S.

It cannot assign ISMNs to foreign publishers (see ISMN Group Agencies for foreign local agency addresses).

The agency encourages and promotes the importance of the ISMN for a proper and free bibliographic listing in Books In Print database.

The ISMN agency allocates and assigns publisher prefixes (which are unique to each publisher) for printed music only.
